Ambassador Anwarul K. Chowdhury will moderate a conversation between Dr. Betty Reardon and Dr. Asha Hans from India. In their Dialogue on the Future, Hans and Reardon will invite attendees to think creatively and practically about responses to global problems and how we, the people, can affect the discussion and eventual resolution of those problems. Their focus will be particularly from the perspective of women’s daily and local realities.
Anwarul Chowdhury: Internationally known for his far reaching his contributions on development in the poorest nations, global peace, championing the rights of women and children whose initiatives led to the UN General Assembly’s adoption of the landmark Declaration and Programme of Action on Culture of Peace and as President of the Security Council, the adoption of the landmark UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, will moderate a discussion between:
Asha Hans: Founder-Director-the School of Women’s Studies, Utkal University, Bhubaneshwar, India; heads Sansristi, a gender research institute; member of FeDem, Feminist Scholar/Activist Network on Demilitarization and of the Pakistan India People’s Forum for Peace and Democracy; bringing a feminist perspective to her scholarship and her peace activism, especially relating to security of refugee women & women of Kashmir; working within holistic framework of peace and security to conceptualize and strategize civil society modes and mechanism for the implementation of UNSCR 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.
Dr. Betty A. Reardon: Founding Director of the International Institute on Peace Education recognized worldwide as pioneer in peace education theory and pedagogy, influencing thousands of teachers and students; she taught at universities around the world, advancing peace and global citizenship education through an integrated focus on human security, sustainable development, human rights, ecology and gender. Received numerous awards for her ability to create and sustain successful institutions and networks, and her personal leadership. Nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize
Hans & Reardon co-edited The Gender Imperative: Human Security vs State Security (Routledge 2010) and are currently cooperating on the development of frameworks and guidelines
