The New Year and Martin Luther King, Jr.

By Siegrid Raible

With hope in our hearts for peace in the New Year
We reach out to friends and family and we pray
For the courage and the resolve to make our lives better
But the morning brings news of unbelievable acts of barbarism

On Saturday, December 31, 2016, at the Al Sinak Market in Baghdad, Iraq
Two suicide bombers kill themselves and 28 innocent shoppers
Leaving the 54 wounded to face a much more challenging world

On the evening of Saturday, December 31, 2016, shortly before midnight
At the Reina Nightclub in Istanbul, Turkey
A man with a gun kills 39, wounds 60 and disappears into the night

Just six days later on Friday, January 6, 2017, in America’s Sunshine State
Inside the Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport
A former US National Guardsman kills five, wounds six and awaits arrest

In a week where a few use force to extinguish 72 innocent lights
I ask myself how many future Einsteins, Gandhis, or Mother Teresas were lost
And I am filled with concern for the 120 injured and their families
Their lives forever changed by pointless acts of violence

Let us not become indifferent to violence in any of its forms
Let us commit ourselves anew to the celebration of life by honoring the
Memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and all living peacebuilders
Let us build that more peaceful world, if not for ourselves than for our children
