A Chemical Attack
Khan Sheikhoun, Syria, April 4, 2017

By Siegrid Raible

The nightmare in Syria continues into its sixth year

Where is Omran Daqneesh?
Injured in Aleppo in 2016 a photo of this stunned child stares at us
from the front page of the August 19, 2016 edition of NY Times

Less than a year later
A chemical attack on April 4, 2017 in northern Syria
A photo of a limp child with an oxygen mask makes the front page of NY Times
Did the child survive?
Do we care?

One hundred years ago on April 6, 1917 the United States declares war
on Germany and enters WW I, the “War to End All Wars”

And yet the barbarism continues
The Russian Revolution, World War II, the Chinese Civil War, Vietnam
and on and on into the 21st Century

Today there are 65 million homeless men, women and children
More refugees than World War II
The result of wars, deprivation and corruption in Africa and the Middle East

If we value life, we must support life
If we value our children’s lives, we must end war and its devastation
If we care about Omran, let us join together and put an end to violence
